In Matthew Jesus asks rhetorically, “How much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him?” Luke in 11:13 substitutes “the Holy Spirit” for “good gifts.” Jesus no doubt made both statements, and both are true to the father heart of God. Sometimes we just need good gifts: a loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou.
But someday the bread and wine will be gone and truth to tell, so wilt thou. Better then to seek and receive the invisible Holy Spirit, who will lead me to the abundant life. I knew a brilliant young scholar who rejected God because he was afraid the Holy Spirit might want him to be a missionary. Today he is a bitter, lonely, minor academic. He thought he knew better than God what he needed. Had he heeded the Spirit, might he have studied the truths of God and man for years and then gone on in joy to co-labor with the Spirit, teaching other brilliant, godly minds?
Whatever I want, I want the Spirit.
